Crews Removing Taney Statue From Maryland State House Grounds

Crews started work late last night to remove the statue of Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney from the State House grounds in Annapolis, Maryland.

Taney was the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court and author of the 1857 Dred Scott decision that upheld slavery.  According to the "Baltimore Sun" the Department of General Services is moving the bronze statue to a secure storage facility for the Maryland State Archives.

The State House Trust voted by email on Wednesday to remove the statue which was installed in 1872.

Governor Larry Hogan was once opposed to moving the statue, but now says the time has come to stop glorifying the darkest chapters of our history.
