Authorities in Massachusetts are investigating a deadly car crash on Route 91 in Hatfield on Sunday (May 5) morning. The Massachusettes State Police said that 31-year-old Daniel Ducharme was driving southbound when he lost control of his vehicle and slammed into the guardrail multiple times before rolling down an embankment, where he crashed into several trees.

Investigators said Ducharme was partially ejected from his 2016 Honda Civic during the crash.

Officials are unsure when Ducharme crashed but said they learned of the accident after receiving a 911 call from a trucker who noticed the vehicle in the woods around 11:30 a.m.

Before the police arrived, a bear found the crash scene and dragged Ducharme's body from the vehicle into the woods. However, the bear fled the area when emergency responders arrived, and they found his body "outside the car."

Officials believe that Ducharme likely died in the crash and was not alive when the bear found him.

Authorities are working to determine what caused the crash.
