Thousands join Hollywood #MeToo March Against Sexual Abuse

Thousands of people marched in the streets of Los Angeles on Sunday to support victims of sexual assault and harassment. The #MeToo March was inspired by the social media movement that revealed that the abuse is pervasive in a bedrock industry for the city - Hollywood.

“The conversation around harassment in Hollywood will broaden to include other industries if we force it to! It’s not going to do it on its own,” organizers said on a Facebook page for the event.

Both women and men have come forward to accuse high-powered entertainment figures of sexual assault and harassment. Director Harvey Weinstein, actor Kevin Spacey, and comedian Louis C.K. have all seen their careers go up in smoke after the allegations came out.

The #MeToo march movement founder Tarana Burke said that while it's good news that people like Weinstein was forced out, there's still lots of work to do.

“For every Harvey Weinstein, there’s a hundred more men in the neighborhood who are doing the exact same thing. The conversation around harassment in Hollywood will broaden to include other industries if we force it to! It’s not going to do it on its own. Sexual violence really doesn’t know a race, a class, a gender. It can happen to anybody. The response to sexual violence, on the other hand, can be highly racialized and highly gendered. What we’re seeing, at least for now, is a unity of survivors, a community of survivors that have grown out of this #MeToo viral moment, that I’m just hoping and praying that we can sustain.”

The march will culminate in a rally at a Hollywood Boulevard intersection.
