Nashville Library Debuts "I Read Banned Books" Card Amid Censorship Efforts

Nashville Public Library has launched a campaign that encourages readers to check out banned books.

The campaign features special library cards that would be printed in bright yellow and say "I Read Banned Books."

The move is in response to calls for books deemed "inappropriate" to be removed from libraries.

NPL Director Kent Oliver said in a press release:

"This campaign is our way of bringing our community together in our shared Freedom to Read, which is essential to sustaining our democracy."

This year, Maus, Art Spiegelman's graphic novel about the Holocaust, was removed from the curriculum in McMinn County, northeast of Chattanooga.

In Williamson County, south of Nashville, the school board voted in February to remove Sharon Creech's Walk Two Moons, about a teenage girl coping with the loss of her mother.
