Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is blaming Democrats for the ongoing partial shutdown of the federal government. Opening the Senate today, McConnell said, "Many Democrats were for border security -- including billions for physical barriers -- before they were against them." Republicans have started referring to the border wall as "physical barriers." President Trump is demanding several billion dollars to help construct the wall, despite campaign promises that Mexico would pay for it.
Last month, Trump said he would be proud to shut down the government over border security. McConnell called the ongoing shutdown a purely partisan political fight and accused Democrats of being unwilling to negotiate a compromise. Democrats say they are willing to negotiate on border security after affected government agencies and departments are re-opened.
