Bus Driver Rescues Barefoot Toddler Wandering Alone In The Frigid Weather

A bus driver in Milwaukee, Wisconsin is being praised as a hero for stopping her bus when she saw a young child wandering near a highway overpass last month. Irena Ivic saw the infant walking barefoot wearing just a diaper and a onesie on a frigid cold December morning and brought the child into the bus.

"I couldn't believe that somebody left the child on the street," Ivic said during a ceremony honoring her for her actions.

When Ivic returned to the bus, another passenger gave the young girl a jacket and the child fell asleep in the bus driver's arms while everyone waited for the police to arrive.

The child was reunited with her father, Hasan Ali Abdul Kasim, who told Fox6 that his wife, who suffers from mental illness, brought their daughter to church and forgot about her. Officials said they do not plan to press charges and are glad that the girl is safe.

Ivic was honored by county officials for going above and beyond her duties.

"She did a lot more than her job. She did the right thing," Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele said. "I don't take that kind of compassion for granted."
