San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama will be shut down for the remainder of the season due to a blood clot in his right shoulder, the team announced on Thursday (February 20).
"The San Antonio Spurs today announced that Victor Wembanyama has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder," the team said in a statement. "The condition was discovered when Wembanyama returned to San Antonio following the All-Star Game in San Francisco. Wembanyama is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024-25 regular season. The team will provide updates as appropriate."
Wembanyama, 21, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year, was selected as an All-Star for the first time this season, averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and an NBA-best 3.8 blocks in 46 games for the 2024-25 season, with the Spurs currently facing a 23-29 record.
Wembanyama will now be ineligible for All-NBA, Defensive Player of the Year and all other major awards as he did not meet the 65-game minimum requirement. The French native averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists and an NBA-best 3.6 blocks during his rookie season.
