The Truth About the "Racist" Receipt Note

A waiter at a Texas steakhouse made national news when he said a customer left a racist note on his receipt, but the truth has since come out and it’s drastically different from what the waiter claimed. Here's the way it went.....

20-year-old Khalil Cavil said that he was surprised to see a racist note on a receipt from a customer at the Saltgrass Steak House in Odessa, Texas.

The note supposedly read, “we don’t tip terrorist [sic],” and circled the name of the server, which is “Khalil.”

“My heart just dropped, I didn’t know what to [say] or what to think in the moment but there’s hurt there,” Cavil said at the time.

“I share this because I want people to understand that this racism, and this hatred still exists,” he added.

The restaurant owner went to the extraordinary step of discovering which customer was connected to the note, and banned him for life out of support for his server.

“Falsely accusing someone of racism is equaling disturbing”

After making national news, Cavil admitted the story was a hoax.

“I did write it,” Cavil said Monday. “I don’t have an explanation. I made a mistake. There is no excuse for what I did.”

Cavil also apologized to a reporter for lying to him about the story.

“I’m sorry. I deeply made a huge, big mistake,” Cavil said. “And I’m in the process of getting the help that I need.”

The restaurant’s owner originally put out a statement of support for their employee in the face of racism. They released a later statement after he admitted it was a hoax.

“After further investigation,” the statement read, “we have learned that our employee fabricated the entire story. The customer has been contacted and invited back to our restaurant to dine on us. Racism of any form is intolerable, and we will always act swiftly should it occur in any of our establishments. Falsely accusing someone of racism is equaling disturbing.”

Cavil had also been offered money by people who felt for his plight – he said that he is returning all the donated money
