Harlingen vs. San Benito Selected to 2018 Great American Rivalry Series Schedule
SAN BENITO, Tx.- The Great American Rivalry Series is proud to announce it will feature this season’s game between the Harlingen Cardinals and the San Benito Greyhounds in the Series’ ninth weekend of games for 2018.
The San Benito vs. Harlingen rivalry has been one of the most intense rivalries in the nation for decades now. The rivalry is so intense the Washington Post write an investigative piece in the early 1990s analyzing why this rivalry was so heated. In the end, it may not matter why there is so much hatred in this rivalry. All that matters is what happens on the field.
The Harlingen Cardinals come into the game on Friday night 3-2 overall under head coach Manny Gomez. They started the season a strong 3-0, but they have since lost their last two matchups. San Benito is 2-3 on the season overall, having also lost their last two matchups. Both teams will look to rebound from these recent struggles with a win over their arch rival.
Entering its 15th season, the Great American Rivalry Series has covered more than 700 games in 44 states throughout the country. Wrapped in tradition, these annual battles excite entire communities, while celebrating the schools, their teams, and their fans. We Know Friday Nights™.

The winning team earns year-long bragging rights and will take home the Great American Rivalry Series Champions trophy, presented by the Marines. The game’s Most Valuable Player will be recognized after the game as part of the Series and an alumnus from each school will be inducted into the 15th class of the Great American Rivalry Series Hall of Fame. A college scholarship will be awarded to the senior Scholar Athlete on each team with the highest GPA.
