Portland Mayor Joins Protesters, Gets Tear Gassed

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler reacts after being exposed to tear gas

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler joined crowds Wednesday night in the Oregon city, where protests for racial and social justice have been ongoing for more than 50 days.

Wheeler, who is also the city's police commissioner, was at times confronted and booed by the crowd as he criticized the deployment of federal officers to the city.

Many were calling for his resignation. Wheeler called the federal presence an unconstitutional occupation, with unidentified agents arresting people without probable cause, denying them their basic rights.

At one point, Wheeler was tear gassed along with the crowd.  The federal agents are part of President Trump's efforts to confront what he cause an explosion of violence in American cities.
